SAME SEX COMMITMENT CEREMONY, NIAGARA FALLS, NY (07/12/2008)
This is a commitment ceremony written for 2 women. A small, private gathering of family and friends in a mother’s living room.
Officiant: Welcome family and friends. We have gathered here today to witness and celebrate the wedding of Bride 1 and Bride 2. I ask all of you gathered here as witnesses to love and support Bride 1 and Bride 2 as they build a life together and their love grows.
Bride 1… Bride 2…. I ask you to be mindful of the vows you make today, to not take these promises lightly. Today you will be joined as one in the eyes of your friends, your family, and each other. These vows will last forever.
(Bride 1 and Bride 2 exchange vows)
Bride 1 and Bride 2 have chosen to affirm their love by the lighting of a unity candle. They have also asked their families to participate in the lighting ceremony. In doing so, their desire is not only to join as one in their union, but to unite the two families as one.
(Mothers of the Brides light single tapers)
Bride 1 and Bride 2, may the brightness of the candles that your families have lit and the brightness of the unity candle that you will light together- shine throughout your lives. As you light the unity candle, I want to ask you and all your friends and family present today, to see the brightness of the flame as a symbol of the brightness that your own lives bring to this new family.
(light unity candle)
May I have the rings?
The ring is a circle- never ending. It goes on and on forever. Let these rings be a constant reminder of your love and devotion to one another.
Do you, Bride 1, promise to love, honor, and cherish, Bride 2, all your life and take her as your wife?
Bride 1: I do. (places ring on Bride 2’s finger)
Officiant: Do you, Bride 2, promise to love, honor, and cherish, Bride 1, all of your life and take her as your wife?
Bride 2: I do. (places ring on Bride 1’s finger)
Officiant: May this path you walk together be filled with happiness, love, and commitment to one another.
May your joys be many and your sorrows be few.
May you always have each other to be with you through the joys and the sorrows.
May you always remember the vows and the joy you share today, each day, for the rest of your lives.
By the power vested in me, by the love that surrounds and binds us all, I now pronounce you life partners. You may kiss your bride.
Beloved guests, it is my dearest pleasure to introduce to you the Mrs. Bride 1 and Bride 2.
Go now and receive the blessings of your friends and family.
